daycare dilemma

We are finally settled into the new apartment! All that's left is to hang the pictures and curtains, which honestly is the last thing on my mind right now.

Task numero uno is to find PDizzle a pre-school/daycare.  In Tuscaloosa, that was no problem because she went to Valley View where my Mom worked (as her "teacher"). I knew that she was in good hands, it was clean and close to our house, and we could afford it.

We paid $465 for everything (she went 9-5 M-F) which is super affordable.  I've been searching schools here in Birmingham for two days and the average price is $700/month for a MOTHER'S DAY OUT! That's only 9:30-1:30.  Maybe I'm setting my standards too high and am looking in the wrong places. But y'all, Birmingham is on The First 48 all the time so I'm not sending her to some place called Thug4Life Day School.  I'm not saying sending her somewhere like that wouldn't be beneficial.  Would I pay $500 a month for her to learn how do live on da skreets in da hood and that pencils are actually used to scratch yo head? FO SHO! Every kid needs to be a little rough around the edges, right?

No.

So basically what I'm trying to say is that I'm going to need a second job in order to send her to day care. I mean, I don't even have a first job at this point in time.  It's kinda like what comes first, the chicken or the egg? Do I get a job and then find a day care? Or do I find a day care first and then decide if I can do massage and still make a profit after paying for day care every month?

So, that's what we are dealing with. I need to look into the in-home day cares around here but I feel like  you only hear about those through word of mouth. And so far I haven't talked to anyone who knows of any!

If any of you live in Birmingham (near Homewood/Vestavia Hills) and know of anything then please let me know!

See? She's hood even when she naps!

Also? Presley needs this backpack.

  1. I feel ya, sista! I'm in the same position. I have decided that if I can't make a decent amount over his daycare bill (anywhere from $600 for part-time to $800+ for full-time) then I just won't work and we will stay broke. My strategy will be to deduct the potential daycare cost from my (future) salary and if it's still decent on a per hour basis, it's worth it for me to work. But for real, it'd be better to struggle financially at home than to send her to some scary daycare (I watch The First 48 also). Sincerely, paranoid mother who is afraid a babysitter will drop her baby on their head.

    1. I am so glad I'm not alone! I drove by one of the potential day cares today (it was one of the cheaper ones) and I just kept on driving, it was sooo ghetto! Good luck on your search!

  3. You seriously CRACK me up with every post.

I'm in the same boat. Is it worth it to even work just to pay for the daycare bill?

    1. I am torn about that! Because on one hand I feel like P needs to get away from me and be around other kids (and I need to be around other adults) but on the other hand I feel like if she didn't go to day care we could attend some fun Mommy&Me classes or something!

  4. I absolutely love taylor's school ((daycare)), kindercare. if there is one near you i definitely recommend it. it is worth every penny! some churchs offer day care for an affordable price too, so maybe that's an option for you.

oh, and she totally needs that backpack!

    1. We do have a KinderCare, I will look into it! The only places I've really been looking are the churches around here and they're the ones that are an arm and a leg! Thanks for the referral to KinderCare!

  5. I am not sure how I found your blog... I guess just hoping around one day! But I have been reading for a while! ;) I live in Bham well south of it... And I have lived here my whole life! Vestavia and Homewood are not cheap child care areas... We say that is where the doctors, lawyers, and Indian chiefs live... Not the coaches wives! Ha! ;) I can joke around with that bc I am a coaches wife too! And I have actually heard of miles collage too! ;) I have friends that have sent their kids to Dawson, all saints, and trinity but those all maybe mdo? Samford has a day care too! I will be happy to give u my advice on any areas and day cares too! Homewood is tricky on side is good and the other side is a little scary! ;) email me at powersshelly(at)yahoo(dot)com with any local questions! I am happy to help! Thanks! ;) Shelly

    1. Thank you so much! I will definitely be emailing you later (you know, what I don't have a child banging on the keyboard like I do now)! Trust me, whenever we go to the park I totally can tell that it's all the ritzy wives out there with their kids, I stick out like a sore thumb! Adam is coaching at Lawson State, but I think I've heard of Miles College before. Not sure which one is more ghetto!

  6. Don't move to DC metro areas. I'm an HOUR from DC. In the wicked suburbs. And I pay over $1200 a month, and the neighbors fall over dead at how cheap my center is. Seriously. In DC? You can pay like $500 a WEEK.
